What should my mother do about the homeless cat on her porch?
My mother has a maine coon cat living on her screened porch. what should she do? give the cat away, put it on oodle or craiglist, or call the shelter?
Maine Coon cats are really great cats. I say put a bed, water and food out there and now she has a resident kitty. If she really doesn’t want the cat you must first make sure the cat doesn’t belong to a neighbor. They tend to find one or two areas in a neighbor hood where they like to hang out. I have two such visitors. Or she could try to find a home with someone that you all know. You do not want to put the cat into a bad enviroment. Look online for Maine Coon rescues. You would be surprised at the different rescue sites and the dedication they have to place these wonderful animals. Hope this helps.

she really doesn’t have to do any of those..
she can just get a little catfood and a towel to lay on and put it out there for the cat.
with craigslist, the cat could end up with some creepo.
at a shelter, the cat would have a horrible life.
if your mom doesn’t want the cat on her property at all, give it to someone you guys know and trust.
call around and see who wants a kitty.
make sure that person can handle the responsibility of a cat and will give it the attention it needs!

Call a no-kill shelter and put something out that it can eat.

Poor thing. Are you sure it doesn’t belong to someone? If it’s a purebreed, it could just be hanging out on your mom’s porch in it’s free time. I put a collar on my cat but he has a bad habit of losing it, and he has had at least two "other families" in the past two years. Perhaps put up fliers to see if it belongs to anyone, or run an ad shortly in the classifieds. Otherwise I would take it to the shelter. Being a recognizable breed greatly increases it’s chances of adoption.

Before you do any of those things you should take it the vet to make sure it does not have a chip in it.If it does not have a chip in it you could give it to a good friend or a family member.

She shouldn’t have to do anything unless the cat is trying to attack her or is seriously damaging her house. I would say just have her put out a bowl of water and maybe some dry cat food and the cat will just be fine.
Like i said, the only reason she should need to call a shelter/animal control is if the cat is causing a great deal of damage.
Craigslist won’t do much unless you actually have a way of obtaining the cat and handing it over, same with simply giving it away.
It’s just trying to survive.

If your mother has put out food for the cat, congratulations, she has a new cat.
Craigs list is a bad idea for reasons mentioned and no-kill shelters have a dirty little secret of sending their undesirables to shelters that do kill so be careful.
Any reason why your mom can’t keep it? They’re pretty much low-maintenance animals…..

I’m for giving it away to someone that she trusts. I don’t trust shelters because of the killing of strays thing and craiglist is just full of creeps.
