Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 2 (1925-1930)

February 8th, 2010

Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 2 (1925-1930)
Document’s second volume of George Williams and Bessie Brown’s complete works contains their final recordings as a duo (tracks 13 and 89, dating from 1925 and 1926) and eight records made by Williams without Brown during the years 19251930. This finishes off the chronology begun on the previous volume. Accompanying instrumentalists include Fletcher Henderson and his bandsmen Don Redman and Charlie Green; Canadianborn and Michiganraised pianist Louis Hooper; songwriter and pianist Lemuel Fowler, and cornetist Harry Tate. Curiously for a bluesman, but not at all unusually for an exvaudevillian and theatrically trained performer, Williams shows off his ability to sound like a Swiss mountaineer on “Yodelin’ the Blues Away.” Eleven titles by six other duos fill out the disc and transform it into a valuable and entertaining anthology of AfricanAmerican entertainments from the ’20s. Eddie Hunter (b.1888) and Alex Rogers (18761930) perform “I’m Done” and “Bootlegger’s Ball,” a pair of vintage spoken comedy routines recorded in 1923 with piano accompaniment by Harlem stride piano master Charles Luckeyeth Roberts. Hunter, who at one point worked as a lyricist for Bert Williams, would later retire from theater and become a very successful businessman specializing in Harlem real estate. “Sweet Mandy” and “Who Calls You Sweet Mama Now” were recorded in 1924 by Louella Jones (Alberta Perkins) and Jazz Caspar (William Weldon “Billy” Higgins), composer of “There’ll Be Some Changes Made.” The cornetist on this session, Bubber Miley, would soon achieve fame as one of Duke Ellington’s star soloists. “Just Too Bad” and “I’m Gonna Kill Myself” were performed in 1926 by pianist Mike Jackson and Mabel Richardson, with Thomas Morris blowing the cornet. Jackson recorded a lot with Morris during this time period, and was a cardinal member of Morris’ Hot Babies. Unlike tracks 119, which were recorded in New York and New Jersey, “I Don’t Care What You Say” and “That Same Cat” came together at a studio in Memphis, TN and were sung by Alfoncy and Bethenea Harris with backing by a trio led by clarinetist Douglas Williams. The male half of Harris Harris is believed to have been responsible for the brief alto saxophone passages on “I Don’t Care.” This highly entertaining compilation closes with three hokum recordings made for Brunswick in Chicago during the year 1929. The cleverly named Pete and Repeat were supported by an unidentified guitarist and a pianist believed to have been Clarence “Pinetop” Smith, while the quartet accompanying Hilda Alexander and Mamie McClure, billed as the BackaTown Boys, is believed to have included trumpeter Natty Dominique (best known for his work with clarinetist Johnny Dodds), banjoist Ikey Robinson, and (apparently the only verified participant) New Orleans string bassist Bill Johnson.

Sales Record Achieved by Land Rover… Again

February 7th, 2010

The people behind Land Rover must be doing something good. Of course, would they have gotten their second sales record in two years globally if they were not? The manufacturer of all wheel drive vehicles has sold 192, 500 vehicles around the world. This is 4 per cent higher than their previous years’ sales or an addition of 8,500 vehicles from 2005.

They have achieved this feat globally; in the United States they have increased their sale by 3.5 per cent. This is mainly due to the release of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport which has increased its sales by up to 80 per cent from the previous year. In Russia, another growing market for their 4×4 units, they have increased their sales by 54 per cent than the previous year with the Land Rover Discovery as the top choice of buyers. Their Russian market has been steadily growing for the past 6 years, a testament to the confidence of the public in the performance of the car and its Land Rover parts. An increase in their sales in the Middle East reflects 54 per cent growth and in North Africa, a 43 per cent increase.

Another market the brand is focusing on is the New Zealand market which they are expected to enter in the middle of this year. The Land Rover Range Rover with the TDV8 diesel engine is UK’s best selling luxury car, showing just how competitive globally this brand is. This model accounts for 92 per cent of the total sales in the region.

The brand has surely left the question to the reliability of their vehicles behind. And they are definitely back to compete even against Asian all wheel drive vehicles which have, for some time, taken over the European market in off road vehicles.

The company has made this growth on their sales despite not having the Land Rover Freelander for the second half of the year. The next generation Land Rover Freelandeer will be built alongside the Jaguar X-type in Halewood.

All these growth in sales number can only be good news for the Ford Motor Co. which owns the Land Rover brand. They no doubt need figures like these to boost the financial status of the company.

Another piece of positive news coming from Land Rover is its continuing relationship with the Ion Group. For fifteen years, the relationship between them has achieved a number of awards for customer service excellence. Ion is responsible for tactical promotional activity and dealer network support. And another three years more will be added to the relationship of the two companies when Land Rover appointed the Ion Group to take control of its sales management center.

Get benefits from Orlando foreclosure homes for sale

February 7th, 2010

Many real estate experts believe that Orlando foreclosure homes for sale will continue to rise for sometime, which indicates the risk of increasing number of people losing their homes to foreclosures. Before the beginning of the housing crisis, sub prime lenders charged lower interest rates from people and borrowing money from lenders on easy repayment terms was the most viable option. However, with increasing number of people losing jobs and suffering pay cuts, it has become difficult for homeowners to sustain the mounting pressure on them to repay their mortgage loans.

As a result of this, many people have been forced to give up their homes for foreclosure sales. This has led to increase in the number of homes that are offered among foreclosure listings at lower prices, which has evoked greater interest among homebuyers for making investment in such properties. Even sellers are making use of this great opportunity and looking for potential buyers who can invest in their foreclosed properties. Banks and other government institutions are under a great pressure to offer such foreclosed properties on sale and recover their dues as soon as possible. At present, the market is in favor of the buyers as the sellers are offering huge discounts of foreclosed homes across Orlando.

Besides, many sellers are even offering different kinds of incentives on Orlando foreclosure homes for sale, which includes significant reduction of closing costs on such properties. You can purchase these properties through public auctions or transact directly from the sellers and get good bargains on foreclosed properties across Orlando. It is much easier to invest in foreclosed homes of your choice today in the preferred location at lower prices. This is the best time to invest in these properties, which require little investment in the initial phase with good returns in the future.

If you want to get good reduction on these foreclosed properties across Orlando, then you can get in touch with some of the best Orlando real estate agencies.

How To Successfully Run A High Impact Promotional Sale

February 7th, 2010

High Impact Promotional Sales can do many great things for your business. They can create fantastic cash flow, move old inventory, give great customer perception about your retail store and increased your sales and profitability long-term. The key to having a high impact promotional sale is to be priced right and to create curiosity and excitement.

First, it is best to price as much merchandise as possible. The more you price, the better your sales will be. Let the customers see the regular price and the sale price. Here a few tips for a high impact promotional sale.

The best time to run is before one of your peak periods. For example, you can have a sale in November until Thanksgiving. You should have the high impact sale for at least 3 weeks and 4 or 5 could be even better depending how much old inventory you have. You should have at least one high impact sale a year, but may want to consider 2 per year. This is addition to any regular sales you currently run in your retail store.

Everything on the store should be on sale. If you are at keystone, the minimum discount should be 10% off. Here is a suggested breakdown of ad prices:

10% off – Should be about 10-15 % of the store

20% off – Should be about 70-80 % of the store

50% off – Should be about 10-15% of the store

Your best-sellers should be 10% off. You should run 2-3 items for added discounts during the promotion for one week at a time. Normally, I would take some of the 20% off items and run them half off.

Normally, taking discounts of 30-40% do not produce more in sales. That is why; the discounts go from 20-50% off. Also, if you make signs, studies have shown that ½ off sells better than 50% off. If you had some old items or slightly damaged, you might want to consider 75% off regular retail. Most likely, you will be losing money, but the benefit is turning dead inventory to cash. With this cash, you can buy better selling items. The key to running a retail store is turning the merchandise.

If your products have a lower gross margin than keystone, you need to makes some adjustments to the discount amounts, but try to have most of your items still at 20% off. You may want to use a lower discount, but if you dilute it too much, the promotional sale will not be effective. Too many retail owners get hung up with gross profit percents than gross profit dollars. The purpose of having this sale before a peak period is to gain new customers for your peak period.

What is the best time to start this sale? I would say for most stores, it is Tuesday. Many stores can use Sunday & Monday for pricing. Many stores are closed Sunday anyway, but there is no way, you are going to give up a day’s business. If you stay open trying to price on Monday, it will never get done. Many customers on Monday will come back for the sale and will spend much more than originally planned.

I would price all the 10% and half off merchandise first. In case, you do not get finished, you can have signs and tell the customers anything not priced is 20% off regular retail. Make sure you signed anything that is marked half off and would be wise to have a display of something right near the entrance. You want the customer’s to get a perception of great pricing. Also, do not put signs on merchandise that is 10% off unless, it is a high ticket item showing regular and sale price.

How do you advertise this sale? I would either have a banner in front of your store or several signs that say” Everything on Sale”. You would be able to reuse these for future sales also. Even though it’s gaudy, colors such as Hot Pink can be seen far away and drive curiosity. You could place an ad in the local paper Monday and have radio advertising Monday. Also, send a direct mailing to your store mailing list on Saturday. Basically, tell them everything is on sale for a limited time and when the sale starts.

High impact promotional sales ran correctly can help a struggling business or create cash for the busy season ahead. Go ahead and have a high impact promotional sale, you may be surprised with the results.
